Allows
Wide Open Throttle Gearchanges
Flat-Shift can eliminate those frustrating and sometimes embarrassing
"bog downs" off the line by perfectly matching revs to
your pre-set limit every single time. You never lose boost between
gear changes either. The system allows full boost to be retained
on up shifts as your right foot never has to leave the floor because
the Flat-Shift cuts engine power for the fraction of a second that
you have the clutch pedal down meaning your engine has no time to
bleed boost pressure between gears.
How
Does it Work?
Flat shift uses a RISC Microprocessor that runs at 4 MHz ( 1 Million
Instructions Per Second ) that monitors engine rpm 50 times per
second. If rpm is equal to or above the set 'trigger' rpm level
and the clutch pedal is depressed, Flat-Shift cuts power to the
fuel injectors via the main 12v power rail. Some multi coil systems
also have the positive side of their ignition coils on the same
12v bus so spark is cut at the same time. As a back up for cars
with their ignition coils on a seperate 12v supply, Flat-Shift features
an output that connects to the crank angle sensor to turn off the
timing signal while power is being reduced which will also cut spark.
Better than a BOV for keeping a turbo spooled, Flat-Shift primarily
uses fuel cut to reduce power and keep rpm at the set 'trigger'
point because on modern EFI, catalytic converter equiped cars it
is not wize to use an ignition only rev limiter as unburnt fuel
passing through the cat will very quickly destroy it. Ignition cut
is used in tandem with fuel cut so that miss firing and leaning
out are minimized during the power reduction cycle.
Why
Fuel and Spark must BOTH be cut
Old
style spark only rev limiters where designed to operate on old fashioned
carby and dizzy type engines. They operated by intermittently grounding
the negative side of the single ignition coil to cut spark.
A
rev limiter designed for a modern EFI motor needs to cover a few
more bases.
1.
A spark only system on an EFI car will allow raw fuel straight through
the engine and will rapidly contaminate the catalytic converter
and destroy it. Excess fuel will also wash the bores and contaminate
the engine oil system risking long term bottom end damage.
2. Most modern EFI cars have multi coil ignition systems which bare
no resemblance to old dizzy and points systems so you can't simply
ground a coil to the same effect.
3. A fuel cut only system runs the risk of leaving small amounts
of fuel flowing through the engine which may ignite risking lean
burn and engine damage.
The most effective and safest method of reducing
power output independent of throttle position (i.e. WOT) is to stop
fuel supply and simultaneously cut spark activity to eliminate any
possible lean burns situations. On an EFI car, it's the only safe
way of rev limiting.
Install
and Setup
Installing
Flat-Shift is generally fairly simple as the main 12v power bus
for the fuel injectors usually runs through the vehicles fuse box
so is easy to locate and tap into. This source is also used to provide
power for Flat-Shifts electronics. Other connections include hooking
up the tacho signal, connecting to the crank angle sensor (if needed),
mounting and connecting the clutch switch along with a good earth
connection and that's about it. The system comes with a color keyed
wiring harness and full instruction manual.
We'd
suggest setting Flat-Shift approx 2,000 rpm below your red line
or shift point for optimum performance. Rev-Lite is perfect for
keeping an eye on your shift point without having to keep looking
down at the tacho.
Setting
the RPM level you require on launch and shifts is as simple as holding
down the 'set' button when you start the engine, ( 2 LEDs on the
front panel will flash once letting you know you have put Flat-Shift
into 'set' mode) bring the engine revs up to where you want and
release the 'set' button ( the 2 LEDs will flash twice to confirm
your new setting) Each new RPM setting is burned into the Flat-Shifts
EEPROM and stays set even if the battery is removed from the vehicle.
Why
do it?
No
matter if you're at the drag strip or on the street, Flat-Shift
allows you to claim the 10ths of a second per gear change you'll
need to beat the competition. Not to mention the ability to blast
off the line on full boost giving you almost unbelievable 60ft times!
Try to imagine how much extra horsepower you would need to gain
those 10ths otherwise, and how much that power would cost. Flat-Shift
gives you the technological advantage only the pro's used to have
access to, at
an affordable price.
